The inner layer of the sandals contains levels of lead that exceed the federal ban. Lead is toxic, and if ingested by young children can cause adverse health issues.
No incidents or injuries are reported.
However, the American Academy of Pediatrics reported in 2017 that roughly 1.2 million cases of elevated blood lead level are believed to have occurred in the U.S. between 1999 -- 2010, but only 50 percent were reported to the CDC.
According to the CDC, adverse effects of lead ingestion include damage to the brain and nervous system, slowed growth and development, learning and behavior problems and hearing and speech problems.
This recall involves Kolan’s Otter MOMO children’s sandals.
The sandals were sold in brown with Velcro closure (model D741) and gold with buckle closure (model D723) and in children’s sizes 6 to 12.
Otter MOMO is printed on the inside of the shoe. The model, batch number #LIANG2201 and the size are printed on the inside of the heel straps.
The sandals, manufactured in China, were sold exclusively online on Amazon.com from March 2022, through April 2022, for between $22 and $26.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled sandals and contact Kolan for information on how to dispose of them properly and receive a full refund.
